Drawing Tablet’s Pen not Writing Smooth? Solved!

For years, I used mouse to draw art digitally. It’s time consuming, a bit fun and proud (since all of them draws with a drawing tablet while you do your magic with a mouse), and takes a lot of effort to make the art.

However, there were a lot of disadvantages, like, controlling pressure that easy, or when making character sprites. You have to measure the height of other characters with the one you’re currently drawing so they don’t look weird in the actual game when standing beside each other (like, the other person’s head is too big, the other one is too tall etc.). At least, with a drawing tablet, you can place the original character behind a layer and set the opacity to make it less solid, then you draw a new sketch of a new character and make the original character some sort of guide to your other characters.

This time, I purchased a Genius drawing tablet from Lazada (see my previous post). It’s nice, cheap, delivery is great and no additional delivery fee.

Reading the manual, there’s a driver needed to be installed to your computer so you can use the tablet. This Genius tablet didn’t say in its description that it works in Windows 10, but it actually does!

All is good, until I tried drawing with Paint Tool SAI.

It was horrible! It was absolutely crappy! I’d draw a straight line and the results are jagged scribbles. It doesn’t write smoothly like I thought it would.

I started thinking that maybe the product delivered got damaged in some way. I started thinking that it was another money wasted. I started to think that this tablet won’t do me any good, or might get back to using mouse again.

I started posting on a lot of forum to see what’s the problem and asking for other artists if they had the same problem. It turns out that the problem lies in Paint Tool SAI’s settings!

It seems that I haven’t adjusted some important settings in Paint Tool SAI. What’s important is the Smoother/Stabilizer on the upper part of the screen. It was set to 2, when it should be set to “S-7” or whatever the artist is comfortable with. For me, I set it to S-6. There is also the advanced settings that needs to be checked and I also checked the two boxes below for Pressure (Density and Size boxes).

So now, it’s working very smoothly! I’m glad all my doubts completely vanished!

At this moment, I ditched my mouse and even used my tablet as the mouse for my laptop! It’s easy to use, too. And for a cheap tablet, the Genius Easy Pen i405X is definitely worth it! I haven’t met a Wacom in my entire life, but I can say that I could live with this current tablet that I have now.
